Major Recruitment is proud to be working in partnership with a well-established and growing business within the food and agricultural sector to recruit an experienced Shunter Driver for their busy Yard team based in Rochester, Kent.

This is an excellent opportunity for a capable, reliable and safety-conscious Shunter Driver to join a successful operation and play a vital role in keeping transport, warehouse and production activities running efficiently.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers and vehicles around the yard, ensuring trailers are positioned correctly and available where and when they are required.

The Role:

As a Shunter Driver, you will be responsible for manoeuvring and positioning trailers safely across the yard and supporting the wider transport and warehouse operation.

Duties will include:

  • Safely manoeuvring and parking vehicles and trailers within the yard
  • Positioning trailers at loading bays to support inbound and outbound operations
  • Carrying out daily vehicle and trailer safety checks
  • Reporting defects in line with Vehicle Off Road (VOR) procedures
  • Completing trailer movements safely and efficiently according to the daily operational plan
  • Coupling and uncoupling trailers safely when required
  • Maintaining accurate records of trailer and vehicle movements
  • Communicating effectively with the Yard, Transport, Dispatch and Production teams
  • Supporting other yard activities when required, including Gatehouse, Banksman or Forklift duties where trained
  • Keeping the yard clean, organised and safe
  • Following all company Health & Safety, Food Safety, Hygiene and site procedures at all times

Working Hours:

  • 45 hours per week minimum
  • Up to 60 hours per week maximum, across any 5 days
  • Working 5 days per week, including weekends on a rota basis
  • Typical start times are between 07:00am and 07:30pm, finish time is dependent on work load
  • Finish times are variable depending on workload and operational requirements
  • Approximately 2 weeks per year will require a 14:00 – 00:00 shift
  • Flexibility is essential to meet business requirements
  • Overtime paid after 45 hours £20.15

Pay:

  • £16.12 per hour basic rate
  • £20.15 per hour overtime rate after 45 hours (Time + 25%)
  • Minimum 45 hours per week
  • Up to 60 hours available across any 5 days, subject to operational requirements

Requirements:

Essential

  • Previous shunting experience is essential
  • Previous experience manoeuvring and positioning trailers within a busy yard
  • Strong understanding of health and safety procedures
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Reliable, punctual and safety-conscious
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a busy team

Desirable

  • Valid HGV/LGV Class 1 (C+E) Licence
  • Previous experience within a transport, warehouse or logistics environment
  • Experience working within a packhouse, manufacturing, agricultural or food production environment
  • Banksman or Forklift experience
  • Experience using handheld scanning equipment

Major Recruitment is proud to be working in partnership with one of the UK’s largest food suppliers to recruit experienced HGV Class 1 Drivers for their busy and expanding transport operation based in Rochester, Kent.

Our client is a well-established business with a nationwide logistics network, supplying major UK food retailers and operating across more than 200 sites throughout the country. Due to continued growth and increasing demand, they are looking to add professional and reliable drivers to their transport team.

The Role:

As an HGV Class 1 Driver, you will play a key role in the movement of products and equipment across the UK, ensuring deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on time.

Duties will include:

  • Driving HGV Class 1 (C+E) vehicles across the UK
  • Collecting and delivering goods between operational sites, warehouses and major retailer distribution centres
  • Completing vehicle checks, defect reporting and transport documentation
  • Ensuring compliance with Driver Hours Regulations and company procedures
  • Loading and unloading vehicles where required
  • Using pump trucks and counterbalance forklifts (training provided)
  • Carrying out occasional shunting duties
  • Maintaining high standards of vehicle cleanliness and presentation
  • Providing a professional service to customers and colleagues at all times

Drivers operate from the Rochester depot each day, collecting their allocated vehicle before commencing routes.

Routes & Travel:

  • UK-wide deliveries and collections as far as Scotland
  • Regular work to major supermarket distribution centres
  • Mixture of local and long-distance routes
  • Overnight stays required on occasion for longer journeys
  • Overnight allowance paid (£25-£30 per night)
  • Typically no more than one night out per week

Due to the rural nature of some collection points, applicants should be confident driving on country roads and have a minimum of one year’s Class 1 experience.

Working Pattern:

40 hours but most drivers work overtime up to 50-55 hours per week on a rolling rota:

Week 1

  • 5 Days On
  • 1 Day Off

Week 2

  • 5 Days On
  • 2 Days Off

This rota provides approximately one full weekend Saturday and Sunday off every 12 weeks.

Salary & Benefits:

Pay:

  • 40 hours (Time + 25%)
  • Overtime available throughout the year
  • Typical earnings of £50,000+ with overtime
  • Basic earnings approximately £37,000 per year
  • Paid fortnightly
  • All breaks paid

  • Overnight allowance for nights away
  • Additional £25 per day when driving the company’s 30-seat bus (where required at the Kent site)

  • Valid Driver CPC

Desirable

  • Counterbalance Forklift experience (Training required but must be willing)
  • PSV Licence – Applicants interested in obtaining a PSV Licence may be eligible for funded training.
