Design & Technical Engineer

We are looking for a Design & Technical Engineer for our client in the Farnworth area, working hours are Monday to Thursday 7:30am till 4:00pm and Friday 7:30am till 12:50pm.

Purpose of Role:

A focused and professional individual reporting to the Technical & Design Manager, the engineer role will be responsible for designing and specifying products that meet the needs of our Customers. Providing key information to the production department; technical and costing support to the Sale’s Department, and working with colleagues across both the Manchester and global group business in following new product development processes will be core to the role.

Main duties

  • Provide technical & design engineering support to Sales.
  • Calculate direct cost of manufactured products ready for quoting.
  • Create manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks
  • Update and produce manufacturing data, BOM’s & routes ready for production planning.
  • Maintain records of drawings, documents & key paperwork.
  • New product development and assisting these into production along with SOP’s.
  • Aligning and following standard NPD processes across group businesses
  • Identify potential suppliers of new parts & materials.
  • Work closely with production engineering, quality & production to maximise efficiency.
  • Undertake project work to drive continual improvement through the business
  • Undertake other reasonable tasks as requested by the Senior Industrial Engineer & OP’s Manager
  • Liaising with customers on new and existing products

Essential knowledge and experience: (graduates will be considered)

  • Good Computer Skills including MS Office
  • Competent in Solid Works for producing 3D models & drawings
  • 2 years’ experience working in a similar technical based role
  • Experience of project work & managing multiple projects at one time
  • Experience of working in a customer facing role
  • Possess commercial acumen
  • Ability to work to deadlines

£45,000 per annum


A hands-on role maintaining the portfolio of equipment installed and operated to ensure that machine uptime criteria are met. To assist in the maintenance of all aspects of the Company facilities and office environment and to build and install new manufacturing equipment as directed. All work must be performed to meet all current legislative and health and safety standards. To support the Managers by taking responsibility for leading the engineering team of 5 engineers.


Responsible for the maintenance and repair of site mechanical and electrical installations and equipment. Maintaining certain aspects of the buildings and offices

  • To ensure that all equipment and installations are repaired / maintained in a manner to meet current legal requirements
  • To efficiently manage and support the engineering team on a day-to-day basis, ensuring consistent operational delivery through smart working and efficient execution of day-to-day tasks
  • To undertake HR processes such as informal and formal discussions, investigation meetings and any other HR related issues as required
  • In conjunction with production colleagues, allocate, prioritise and balance the workload between the engineering staff to meet the demands of the business
  • Monitor progress of work and projects and report back to management
  • To assist in the building and modification of electrical / mechanical equipment in conjunction with other site engineering staff
  • Development and implementation of preventative maintenance schedules for the factory machinery and equipment including forklift trucks, in conjunction with machine operators and factory management
  • Proactively identify and implement improvements to working practices and manufacturing processes in conjunction with Lean Manufacturing teams
  • Dealing efficiently and effectively with machine breakdowns, managing, and reducing all aspects of machine downtime caused by electrical and mechanical breakdowns
  • Accurately completing prescribed safety checks on machinery and equipment
  • Providing reasonable breakdown cover outside normal hours
  • Dealing with existing suppliers and ordering spare parts as required
  • Sourcing mechanical equipment as required in conjunction with Operations Manager and Supply Chain Manager
  • Undertaking and completing project work of a mechanical / electrical / fabrication nature
  • Maintaining computer-based information relating to machine performance and maintenance schedules.
  • Develop and maintain standards in the engineering department including task and area risk assessments and 5S auditing.
  • Any other duties as required commensurate with the role and level of responsibility of the post.

Proposals / Tendering Engineer

A Proposals / Tendering Engineer with experience of turnkey projects is sought by an established and growing engineering company in the Derby area

As the Tendering Engineer you will be responsible for assigned enquiries; deal with all commercial and estimating activities associated with tender requirements and all associated subcontract and supplier requirements from receipt of tender enquiry through to contract award and consequent handover to project department.

The role will involve:

  • Receiving initial enquiries, attending site where necessary to assess the scope of works required both technically and commercially in line with latest standards and specifications.
  • Managing and interpreting customer requirements.
  • Liaising with customers to develop and deliver proposals of larger, involved and often turnkey projects. * Costing of project works, and equipment supply
  • Creating professional quotations through to negotiating and closing sales by agreeing terms and conditions
  • Work with the wider sales team for new and refurbished HV & LV electrical equipment
  • Supporting the Sales team by making technical presentations to clients

The successful applicant will have the following skills, experience and personal qualities:

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in an electrical engineering discipline.
  • Experience of working with HV & LV electrical installations.
  • Previous experience of creating quotations and engineering proposals to customers
  • An enthusiastic approach with good communication skills.
  • Ideally you will also have a knowledge of JCT / NEC contracts, DNO and private electrical network systems

The role will require travel regularly within the UK, so a full driving license is essential.

The role
The role primarily involves conducting pre-planned & reactive maintenance for an automated cold store facility, operating at minus 23 degrees. Candidates must be time served multi-skilled engineers.

The shift pattern for the role is 4 on, 4 off rotating days and nights, 12 hr shifts which will include weekend and bank holidays.


  • Keeping allocated PPM to date to a high standard
  • Servicing and repair of automated equipment and general estate maintenance
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in line with suppliers’ guidelines, this will include conveyors, cranes, cooling systems and oxygen reduction.

About you

  • We need you to be a time served experienced and skilled engineer who can demonstrate thorough knowledge of proven and advanced technology and with the ability to apply that knowledge practically to ensure competitive and innovative advantage.
  • You must hold a recognised electrical qualification.
  • Experience of working with automated stacker cranes (preferred).
  • Experience of working on roller conveyor systems (preferred).
  • You will need to be proactive and independent comfortable making decisions but equally aware of when to escalate or communicate with key stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills to interface with key internal functions, key stakeholders, external regulators, auditors and outside vendors.
  • Experience of working in an automated warehouse environment preferred but not essential.
  • Be able to work at heights up to 42 metres.

Due to regulations of the equipment, and health and safety obligations there is a maximum weight limit on this role of 125KG
