It’s not a break-up… It’s more of a “see you around”
If this were a relationship update, it wouldn’t be “It’s complicated.” It would be: “We’re still in love. Just changing the label.” After two unforgettable years, Major Recruitment is officially closing its chapter as Charity of the Year with Maggie’s Centres. In doing do so, we wanted to pause, reflect, and celebrate those two years, and everything we’ve achieved together. Because this partnership deserves way more than a quiet goodbye.
Why Maggie’s Centres?
We didn’t choose Maggie’s once, we chose them twice.
Because when you find a charity that supports people living with cancer with warmth, dignity and humanity, and you can physically see the impact your fundraising has, it’s almost impossible to walk away.
Across the Major Family, people genuinely loved working with Maggie’s. They loved visiting Maggie’s many centres across the UK and meeting the teams. Loved understanding exactly where the money we were raising went. They Loved knowing it mattered.
Over our 2 years with Maggie’s, it never felt like “corporate charity work”. It felt human, and that’s why this partnership worked so beautifully!
Things we did that definitely weren’t in anyone’s job descriptions
Over the last two years, the Major Family collectively decided that fear, comfort and common sense were all optional… obviously as long as it was for Maggie’s!
In those 730 days, collectively we have:
- Jumped out of planes, with a parachute ofcourse
- Abseiled down mountains and over bridges (once was never enough)
- Completed the Berlin Marathon
- Destroyed taste buds in chilli-eating challenges
- Punished ourselves in baths of ice
- Hosted two Maggie’s Charity Golf Events (again, once was never enough)
- Walked on actual fire🔥
- Taken on the Great North Run
- Completed countless half marathons up and down the UK
- Locked our Director up for the official Jail or Bail event
- Glammed up for the Maggie’s Orange Ball
- Turned ourselves Outrageously Orange for a full day of fundraising
- Conquered the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in one day
- Survived the Yorkshire Traverse (barely)
- Plus so many mini events, from Fantasy Football to bake sales in between
All voluntarily. All passionately. All for Maggie’s.
The people behind the madness
None of this happened by accident.
Representatives from across the Major Family stepped up to lead fundraising and volunteering in their regions. They organised events, motivated teams, and convinced colleagues that ice baths and walking on fire were excellent ideas.
This partnership succeeded because of our people, and because Maggie’s representatives made every single effort to make us feel valued, supported and worthwhile.
The bit where it gets emotional (we tried not to cry)
Maggie’s Centres provide calm, support and reassurance to people when life feels overwhelming. They help people feel less alone at a time when everything has changed. That can leap from simply offering a calm and quiet place to have a cup of tea when things are getting too much, to expert support, workshops and courses. There is always a friendly face in the centre who will make you a drink and just sit and listen (which sometimes, is exactly you need).
Being able to support that work has been an absolute honour for us. Actually visualising the difference our fundraising has made is something we will always be proud of!
So while this (charity of the year) chapter officially closes, the love we have for Maggie’s absolutely does not.
- We’ll still show up
- Obviously we’ll still wear orange
- We’ll still join in any events we can
- And we will always shout about Maggie’s whenever we can
Because once Maggie’s has your heart… they tend to keep it.
On our final visit to Maggie’s Centre in Leeds, we handed over the total as it stood of £9,723.00! We’re confident we can finish on £10K as we’ve still got a few people to chase on our final push, feel free to help us out.
