We are working with our client who work within the food industry.

They are seeking a technically minded individual to work closely with their suppliers who are based around the world.

This is a key role because every supplier is important and having close relationships with suppliers at all levels, regardless of culture and location, is key for clients projects and upcoming needs.

Managing projects from reviewing artwork and proofs, to passing off on press are integral parts of the role. One day you could be in the office and the next day on a plane to Europe or the Far East with or without the customer present. Accuracy and precision are very important with a good eye for detail.

Full training will be given, including the different print processes, material properties and supplier and customer relationship management but if you already have experience in any of these areas that would be very beneficial. Your aim is to generate a first class service level.

We would love you to have some experience in a customer service or purchasing role, have some creative ability or a technical side that makes you want to take things apart and understand how they work!

Overview

The Technical Services Packaging Engineer works closely with existing and new customers to trial new materials on their packing lines. The majority of customers are on the UK mainland, with occasional visits to Ireland and Europe.

Our client works to a 24 hour callout which involves visiting clients premises within 24 hours of receiving the call to diagnose and help fix their queries.

The role is suited to a problem solver with an inquisitive attitude who has worked within the food packaging industry.

Key Responsibilities

Acting as a technical expert to troubleshoot packaging line issues, diagnose root causes of problems, and implement effective solutions. This may involve collaboration with cross-functional teams such as production, engineering, and quality assurance.
Providing technical expertise and support during the trialling of new food products, including compatibility testing.
Maintaining comprehensive documentation of procedures and specifications.
Collaborating with packaging material suppliers and equipment vendors to evaluate new technologies, troubleshoot issues, and optimising performance.
Building strong relationships with clients to ensure timely support.
Developing contingency plans and protocols to address issues
Staying abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in food packaging engineering through ongoing training, industry conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Requirements

Understanding of packaging materials and the machines they run on.
Experience working within the food industry.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify root causes of packaging issues and develop effective solutions.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for effectively liaising with crossfunctional teams, suppliers, and customers. The ability to convey technical information in a clear and concise manner is crucial.

Offline tool setting using Zoller pre-setter software.
Create detailed Collision Avoidance Software (CAS) machine environments.
9-axis machining to produce intricate, precision components.
ATC management
Okuma programming system
Carry out machining of components to tight tolerances and validate one’s own work. Machining will include stainless steel as well as other exotic materials (hastelloy, inconel, tristelle etc.)
To measure components produced on machines, using a variety of inspection equipment (including FARO arm and CMM) to ensure that components are manufactured to drawing dimensions and tolerances.

Experience/Knowledge

Experience of working to tight tolerances.
Prior knowledge and experience of machining stainless steels in a variety of forms including billet, castings and pressings would be advantageous.
Ability to operate computer equipment for data purposes.
Ability to read engineering drawings and engineering quality plans.
Ability to use a variety of measuring equipment.

Experience and Knowledge:

Experience working with stainless steels and programming CNC controls (Fanuc/Okuma/Mazak).

Familiarity with machining stainless steels to tight tolerances.

You will ideally be degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering and be proficient with Mathcad and/or Excel for engineering calculations and have a good understanding of mechanical engineering principles (statics,
thermal, fatigue etc).

You must hold a recognised electrical qualification.
Experience of working with automated stacker cranes (preferred).
Experience of working on roller conveyor systems (preferred).
You will need to be proactive and independent comfortable making decisions but equally aware of when to escalate or communicate with key stakeholders.
