Children’s Support Worker (Respite/Short Breaks)

Major Healthcare are seeking experienced, compassionate and dependable Support Workers to provide high-quality, child-centred support to children with complex learning disabilities and mental health needs.

This role involves delivering short-term support (6-8 hour shifts) to children and young people within their own homes and taking them out in the community. Flexibility and a caring, respectful approach are essential.

The Role:

This role requires patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations. As a Children’s Support Worker, you will:

  • Provide consistent, nurturing and individualised care
  • Support daily routines, communication, and community access
  • Implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies
  • Encourage independence through structured, meaningful activities
  • Work collaboratively with families and multidisciplinary professionals
  • Follow care plans, risk assessments and create accurate shift reports
  • Promote safeguarding, dignity and inclusion

Key Requirements:

  • Ability to travel anywhere within County Durham
  • Availability to work at short notice, including evenings and weekends
  • A respectful and professional attitude when working in family homes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A genuine passion for supporting children and their families

What We’re Looking For:

  • Minimum 6-12 months paid experience supporting children or young people with learning disabilities and/or complex needs in the UK
  • Experience supporting behaviours that challenge
  • Knowledge of behavioural support strategies
  • Full UK driving licence (preferred but not essential)
  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Children’s and Young people workforce (preferred but not essential)
  • Right to work in the UK
  • A caring, empathetic and trauma informed approach
